The Marriage of the Lamb
Revelation 19:1-21

The Great Tribulation ends with a heavenly celebration: a wedding.  The Bible describes many weddings:

  • God Himself performed the very first wedding (Adam & Eve) – Genesis 2:18-25.
  • The wedding of Ruth and Boaz – Ruth 4.
  • The wedding of Ahab and Jezebel – 1 Kings 16:29-31.
  • The wedding in Cana (Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine) – John 2:1-11.
  • The most magnificent wedding of all: “Let us be glad, rejoice, and give him glory, because the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has prepared herself.” (Revelation 19:7)

  1. A screenshot of the wedding (19:1-10)
  2. The music = the Hallelujah Chorus (1-6) Hallelujah = used only here and in 10 Psalms. hallel (Praise) and yah (the Lord) – Praise the Lord!
  • Praise the Lord – “Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God, because his judgments are true and righteous, because he has judged the notorious prostitute who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality; and he has avenged the blood of his servants that was on her hands.”
  • Praise the Lord – “Her smoke (the Fall of Babylon) ascends forever and ever!”
  • Praise the Lord – “Then the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who is seated on the throne, saying, Amen! Hallelujah! A voice came from the throne, saying, Praise our God, all his servants, and the ones who fear him, both small and great!”
  • Praise the Lord – “Then I heard something like the voice of a vast multitude, like the sound of cascading waters, and like the rumbling of loud thunder, saying, Hallelujah, because our Lord God, the Almighty, reigns! Let us be glad, rejoice, and give him glory, because the marriage of the Lamb has come.”
  1. The bride = the church
  • “The bride has prepared herself” (2 Corinthians 11:2 – “pure virgin” & Ephesians 5:25-27 – “without spot or wrinkle or anything like that”)
  • “She was given fine linen to wear, bright and pure. For the fine linen represents the righteous acts of the saints.”

How and when is the church “made ready” for the wedding?  After the rapture, what are the resurrected believers (the church) doing during the Great Tribulation?  Answer = the Judgement Seat of Christ (Romans 14:10-12 & 2 Corinthians 5:10)

  • For believers already in heaven – not to determine salvation or forgiveness of sin.
  • Occurs between the rapture and the millennial reign of Christ.
  • Our works – a book of remembrance (Malachi 3:16), quality of works (1 Corinthians 3:11-13, good vs. bad), and the motivation of works (Luke 12:2-3).
  • Our rewards – Losing rewards (1 Corinthians 3:14-15, 1 John 2:28) and gaining rewards (1 Corinthians 9:25 – the crowns: crown of life, righteousness, glory and rejoicing).
  1. The guests = “The he said to me, ‘Write: Blessed are those invited to the marriage feast of the Lamb!’” Who are these guests?  The redeemed of all the ages who were saved before and after the church – Old Testament believers and tribulation believers.
  2. The groom = “He also said, ‘These words of God are true.’ Then I fell at this feet to worship him, but he said to me, ‘Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you  and your brothers and sisters who hold firmly to the testimony of Jesus.  Worship God, because the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.’”

  1. The triumphant Christ (19:11-16)
  • White horse rider = Faithful and True, judges and makes war with justice
  • Eyes like a fiery flame
  • Many crowns on his head
  • Name written that no one knows except himself
  • Wore a robe dipped in blood
  • His name called the Word of God
  • Armies in heaven followed him on white horses, wearing pure white linen
  • A sharp sword came from his mouth so that he might strike the nations with it
  • He will rule with an iron rod
  • He will trample the winepress of the fierce anger of God, the Almighty
  • A name written on his robe and his thigh = KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS

  1. The defeat of the Beast and its Armies (19:17-20)
  • Beast gathered to wage war against the white horse rider and his armies
  • But the beast taken prisoner along with the False Prophet
  • Both of them thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur
  • The rest killed with the sword of the white horse rider

Conclusions:

  1. Get ready for the Marriage Supper!
  2. Work hard, serve well, and minister faithfully.
  3. God’s judgment judges all.
