Eternal life is not something that we can hope for or think we have, but is an assurance that we can know we have if we know Jesus.John declared that he wrote these things so that we could know that we have eternal life. The easiest way to “unlock” and overview this letter is to summarize what “these things” are that John wrote. I believe that these ideas can be summarized in five points. We can call them the 5 Acid Tests of our Salvation. How can I know that I have eternal life? That is, how can I know that I have truly believed in the Son of God? Here is the first. It’s back in chapter 1. “Am I sensitive to sin?” (1:7-8) The true believer in Jesus Christ ought to detest sin in his or her life. Do you?
The second acid test of our salvation is in chapter 2. “Do I keep His commandments?” (2:3) In addition to being sensitive to sin, the authentic believer in Jesus desires to keep God’s commands.
This is not perfection. We will never attain perfection. But, this is desire—desire to be pleasing to God and keep His commands.
