King Uzziah was a good king who did right in the sight of the LORD. The Bible says that God gave Uzziah success because of his obedience. However, when King Uzziah grew powerful, he also grew prideful. Uzziah entered the Temple and burned incense on the altar—a job only for the priests. Just as the Proverb confirms, pride led to Uzziah’s downfall. (2 Chronicles 26)
Here’s the problem with pride. Pride is easily detected in others, but hard to discern in ourselves. We would do well to pray often that God would show us any hint of pride in our own lives. In our reading today, we read a simple, but powerful word to counteract our pride. “But he who boasts is to boast in the LORD.” It’s that simple! Do you want to protect yourself from pride? Resist any and every temptation to do anything less than to boast always in the LORD.
