Chapter 12 is the highlight of 2 Corinthians. Paul’s words in this chapter put a personal touch to the testimony of God’s comfort that Paul expressed in the opening words of this letter. Every single one of us needs the promise of 2 Corinthians 12:9-10. “But he (Jesus) said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” The promise of God in every situation of life is that His grace is sufficient.
Many attempts have been made across the years to pinpoint Paul’s “thorn in the flesh.” Some believe that the Scriptures are intentionally silent on the matter in order to help us learn that God’s grace is not sufficient only for one kind of problem or thorn, but any and all problems of this earthly life. May each of us learn from the example of Paul and seek contentment in our “thorns” as we rest in God’s sufficient grace.
