Ecclesiastes 3 is no doubt the most familiar chapter of this complex and mysterious book. Ecclesiastes 3 is as mysterious as any portion of this book. The mystery is summarized best in verse 11. Let me see if I can put the mystery into my own words. Everything “under the sun” has an appropriate time, but we don’t know what that time is. Is God playing some kind of game of “hide-and-go-seek” with us?
NO! Thankfully, we don’t know what time it is half of the time! Would you like to know the time of your death? Would you like to know the time of someone else’s death? If you answer “yes” to either of these questions, let me bring you back to reality and tell you, “No!”
What’s the purpose of God keeping us in the dark as it relates to the events of our lives? Notice verse 14—“that we might fear Him.”
The Psalmist gave us a good word as recorded in Psalm 31:15. “My times are in your hands.” Thanks be to God that our times are in His hands. So, what are we to do? First, we are to trust Him. Second, we are to get on with living.
