Examples of servanthood

Listen to today's passage

The nature of servanthood that Christ calls us to is displayed again in chapter 12 with both a negative and positive example. Jesus pointed out both examples. About the teachers of the law, He said, “They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the marketplaces, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers.”

Later as Jesus observed a widow put in her offering of “two very small copper coins,” Jesus commented, “She put in all she had to live on.” Servanthood!

Exactly what is meant by “devour widows’ houses” is not clear, but we understand that it is not a good thing. How ironic that this is the testimony of the teachers. They took what the widows had to live on; this widow gave what she had to live on. What a lesson!
