We read today of this account of a man bringing his son to Jesus. Notice closely the words of the father. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
“If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.”
I would love to see exactly where Jesus placed the emphasis on his question to the father. I have a strong suspicion that the emphasis is on the word “If.”
If (pardon the pun) we are not careful, we approach Jesus much too often with the same kind of pathetic asking. Someone could make the argument that the man did not know better. We, however, know better.
“Everything is possible for him who believes.”
