What makes a person want to follow Jesus? The beginning of the Gospel indicates the ease with which some began to follow Jesus. These early disciples of Jesus immediately followed Jesus. That reaction is the reaction of the author of this Gospel. “As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” (9:9)
However, Matthew’s reaction was not the response of all who witnessed the miracles of Jesus and listened to His teaching. Neither is Matthew’s reaction the decision of many today. What is the reason? As Matthew’s Gospel reveals “Following Jesus is not Always Easy.”
Notice that as Matthew related these miracles, he also related the reaction of others. Some of these reactions are favorable as is the case in 9:8, and 9:9. Other times the reaction to Jesus’ miracles was unfavorable as is the case in 9:10-11, 9:14-17, 9:24, and 9:34.
But, notice that this section concludes with the reaction of Jesus. He has compassion to the point of burden for all who do not believe. (9:36-38) Ask God to give you Jesus’ burden for those who are yet to believe.
